Paulius Motiejunas believes the NBA’s idea of launching a league in Europe would not help the sport grow on this continent.

Euroleague Basketball CEO said discussions with the NBA have brought little progress and raised concerns about how a new competition would affect fans and clubs. He warned that adding another top league would create confusion and damage what European basketball has built over many years.
Motiejunas highlighted that the Euroleague is currently strong, with more fans, more revenue, and rising TV interest. He said the competitive balance of the league is one of its biggest strengths, with teams capable of beating each other regularly.
On the NBA project, he described frustration with the talks, saying the NBA is moving on its own path rather than finding a shared approach. He believes a separate NBA-run league in Europe would split attention and break existing rivalries that fans value.
Motiejunas also commented on current league matters. Russian clubs remain suspended due to the ongoing war. The plan is to return games to Israel in December once the league confirms safety on site, as domestic games in Tel Aviv are currently played with fans.
He added that entering markets such as Abu Dhabi and Dubai can support growth, but the goal is to expand without losing the European basketball identity.
Motiejunas said the Euroleague will stay focused on its fans, strong rivalries, and protecting the culture of the game while continuing to grow.
